Role Summary As Head of Business Development, you will be responsible for the successful development of and investment into renewable energy and energy storage projects in Malaysia. Your responsibility includes business development and origination, due diligence and feasibility assessment, identification of M&A opportunities, land acquisition, right of way, permitting, stakeholder engagement, grid access and usage and other project approvals. You build an organisation and processes that originate and secure projects or project locations. This includes creating, reviewing, negotiating and closing land agreements, project development partnerships and agreements as well as project permitting. You will collaborate with other departments on electricity offtake, financing, technical and construction aspects of projects. You play a key role in progressing project development, including stakeholder management and remain involved in projects until ready to build status and achievement of financial closure. You provide key project inputs to enable structuring, signing and closing of project finance facilities with the support of the local and central investment teams. How You Will Make an Impact Responsible for the development of renewable energy and energy storage projects in Malaysia on time, on budget, within WHSE standards, and meeting the company's profitability targets. Project development and M&A will be a combination of green field, brown field, early and late-stage projects with a focus on photovoltaic and energy storage projects. Lead the identification and evaluation of new RE investment opportunities either directly or with land aggregators, developers and development partners by building and maintaining a strong network. Assessment, feasibility, and due diligence of project opportunities from a land, development, permitting, regulatory, stakeholder and grid connection perspective. Prepare, present and close Investment Committee proposals and approvals. Review and close term sheets and contracts, including land purchase or lease agreements, joined development or development service agreements, support closure of power purchase agreements (PPAs), scope of work for consultants and service providers for permitting, regulatory, technical, ESG and other topics. Building and leading a team of business development, stakeholder engagement, project development, professionals. Working closely with the central investment team and energy offtake experts to secure energy offtake and project financing and legal, engineering, finance, supply chain and other departments to progress the projects. Active management of external stakeholders (including project stakeholders at local, regional, national level) in alignment with management and other internal stakeholders. Preparation of project specific elements of internal approval papers for presentation to management, Board and Investment committees. Lead participation in tenders, bids and pre-qualification documentation, providing methodology, resource and cost estimates and inputs to programmes, financial models and other project planning. Collaborate with internal stakeholders, different teams, escalating issues to management and actively seeking out and implementing solutions to resolve issues. Continuously drive improvements of Blueleaf's project development capabilities, processes and procedures. Commercial governance - project reviews, forecasting and budget and resource management. Presenting and reviewing the project portfolio and it's KPI's to management. Maintain ongoing understanding of overall energy market and utility and regulatory environment and analyse the impacts of market and regulatory changes on future business. Develop network of professional relationships with regional & local stakeholders, land aggregators, land owners, project developers and resources, as well as with TNB, regulatory agencies and industry participants. What Makes You a Great Fit Degree or post graduate qualification in Business Administration, Engineering, Science, Project Management, Finance, Investment, or similar technical or commercial qualification. Proven track record with 15+ years of professional experience in originating, developing and successful investing or completing multiple energy projects, preferably in solar, battery, onshore wind or other renewable energy. Strong network to secure land, with state entities that own or control land, with land agents or aggregators, local developers, government agencies, EPC or construction providers in Malaysia. Intimate understanding of TNB (Tenaga Nasional Berhad) processes, stakeholders and decision making to achieve compliant power evacuation that is un-curtailed or within the planned curtailment parameters. Ability to manage regulatory, permitting and technical discussions with permitting, regulatory and legal representatives and government agencies as well as managing input requirements from internal support functions such as engineering, procurement, legal and finance. Understanding and leadership of GIS based land identification and project pipeline building. Proactive, self-motivated and ambitious personality. Ability to work autonomously / independently to identify new project opportunities and develop existing opportunities. Effective communicator with excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills. Strong project management skills, ability to plan work, deliver to the plan, manage risks and issues and drive outcomes in the face of tight timeframes and external pressures. Excellent written and conversational skills in English and Bahasa Malaysia. Strong MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) skills.
