The Senior Manager/Manager of Engineering leads the electromechanical consumer appliance design and development, overseeing projects and daily team management. The role requires extensive experience in consumer appliance product design, technical leadership, and driving new products to market, including all phases from development to SOP and post-launch activities like cost reduction and product refresh.Product Responsibilities:
  • Take ownership of the design and engineering integrity as well as the technical maturity of new products by developing detailed and rigorous specifications, functional requirements, testing protocols, safety and compliance standards, performance benchmarks, quality measures, predictive star ratings, planning, and clear communication across the product development and engineering teams.
  • Oversee development activities for new products, product transfer projects, and standard operating procedures (SOPs), ensuring they are well communicated, understood, and executed on schedule according to the global product development process and relevant R&D procedures, as agreed upon by project teams.
  • Ensure comprehensive technical specifications are defined timely during the development process and properly documented in design guides, quality function deployment (QFD) charts (if applicable), and on part and assembly drawings.
  • Collaborate closely with the Quality team to integrate quality into the product design.
  • Manage the completion of all contracted development work with external firms or suppliers, from initial specifications through to full evaluation.
  • Maintain regular communication and coordination with other company sites, potentially including international locations.
  • Provide oversight and guidance to reporting engineers on 3D CAD modeling, engineering drawings, prototype builds, engineering builds, and product evaluations.
  • Have experience and familiarity with 3D CAD, engineering drawing, and manufacturing processes such as plastic injection molding, machining, and consumer product assembly.
  • Support multiple projects simultaneously and be available for travel as necessary.
  • Prepare presentation materials to update stakeholders on product design and development status during design reviews.
Process and Planning Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate adherence to the global product development process for all new product development projects, significant changes to existing products, and product transfers to new production sites within the region.
  • Propose and organise development resources efficiently across multiple development sites, working collaboratively with Project Managers and product development engineers to plan resource utilisation.
  • Work closely with regional suppliers to support and drive the delivery of all aspects of the product development program, including core programs, product maintenance, and tooling capacity-this may require frequent onsite supplier visits.
  • Collaborate in setting and implementing departmental goals.
  • Manage assigned budgets and maintain financial oversight.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives aimed at increasing development efficiency, reducing lead times, improving quality and reliability, and achieving cost reductions.
  • Partner with tier 1 and tier 2 suppliers to enhance their design and development capabilities to align with other suppliers in the region.
People Management Responsibilities:
  • Organise and plan the team structure to meet evolving business needs, working closely with Program Management to allocate necessary resources for all projects.
  • Partner with Human Resources to recruit top local talent across various development sites in the region.
  • Conduct performance reviews, manage career development, and coordinate assignments with reporting associates, ensuring alignment with company objectives and individual growth.
  • Support the professional development of engineers through goal setting, coaching, mentoring, and motivation.
  • Enhance and maintain the reputation of the development engineering function as effective, efficient, and reliable within the organisation. Develop and track efficiency and reliability metrics. Foster high morale within the team.
  • Assist with management and administrative duties related to daily activities within the business unit.

  • Familiarity with standards and compliance requirements (e.g., ASTM, UL, IEC) is a plus
Required Experience and Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering is required, preferably in mechanical, electrical, mechatronics, industrial, or manufacturing engineering
  • Over 15 years of professional experience in a technical environment, with a proven track record of leading engineering teams in consumer appliance product design and development; experience with consumer appliance products is a plus
  • Strong foundation in engineering principles and technical project management
  • Demonstrated hands-on leadership in mentoring and supervising technical staff
  • Successful experience managing teams and projects across multiple locations in multinational corporations
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively engage with global teams and stakeholders from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Proficient in 3D CAD, engineering drawing standards, prototype development, and engineering builds
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with individuals at all organisational levels
  • Exceptional problem-solving and analytical abilities
  • Strong communicator capable of motivating, influencing, and persuading engineers, peers, and leadership
  • Skilled in presenting and reporting technical project status, risks, and mitigation plans clearly and appropriately
  • Fluency in English is mandatory; proficiency in Mandarin (reading and speaking) is an advantage
